Is your engine on the way out? If it’s already kicked the bucket, then case closed - however, there are a number of other indicators that your engine is about to go, even if it’s still running at the moment. From Mullins Automotive & Truck Service Center in Ocala, FL, here are some signs of trouble that predict an imminent engine failure is in the cards for your car, truck, or SUV.
Low oil pressure
If your oil is at the correct level, but your gauge reads excessively low or your oil pressure light is on, you have an oil pressure problem. Occasionally, an oil pressure issue can be fixed by an oil pump replacement or by other means - however, there’s a good chance the bearings are worn out, or vital passages are clogged. When this is the case, it’s a matter of time before an engine calls it quits.
Knocking
Rod knock is the most obvious indicator of an engine that is on its last leg. Once an engine is knocking, there isn’t a lot you can do - the sound comes from a loose piston connecting rod rattling around on your crankshaft. In short, the damage has been done, and is about to get worse - and the only way to really fix it is to replace or rebuild the engine.
Compression Issues
If one or more of your cylinders have low compression, there’s a reason - and it most likely won’t be an easy fix. In some cases, a head gasket can cure the problem, but whenever a head gasket goes there are often other issues at play. Don't let that worry you! Our crew has the experience and skill to get the right repair done!
Excessive oil consumption
We wouldn’t necessarily say any oil consumption is normal, but there are allowances for how much oil your car can burn and still be relatively healthy, depending on the make and how many miles the engine has on it. However, if you’re running through more than a quart every few hundred miles or so, you’ve probably got worn rings that will warrant an engine replacement soon. Not only is the compression compromised, but the excessive oil consumption has likely cause further damage and debris as a result.
