If you’ve ever been behind the wheel of a commercial truck, you already know that driving in reverse isn’t easy. At Mullins Automotive & Truck Service Center in Ocala, most of the damage we see is a result of an accident which occurred in reverse.
Obviously, you can’t see behind you. While this is certainly a major obstacle, patience and caution go a long way towards preventing an accident. Here are a few pointers.
Use a spotter (who knows what they’re doing) if possible. A good spotter will stay in the line of sight of your mirror and supply succinct commands to get you backed into the position faster and easier.
Take your time. Go slow, be constantly aware of your surroundings, and don’t hesitate to get out and look around if there’s any doubt in your mind about what’s behind you.
Keep your mirrors clean and well adjusted. A good mirror technique makes all the difference when driving in reverse.
You’re driving the trailer, not the tractor, when in reverse. The trailer is moving forward into a spot, and you are in control of its steering axle. Thinking about it this way may help you more accurately back up.
Lastly, if you can avoid going backward, do that. The best way to avoid an accident in reverse is simply not back up if at all possible. Try and position the truck in such a way when you park, that backing up is unnecessary.
